The year is ending with me having some allergy - this morning I woke up with my face looking like some unsuccessful botox injection to all possible places. Im chewing on plain rice praying that it will go away in the next two days for the New Year party.

2011 has been intense, even though it started in a pretty old fart way - the celebration was in bed, with ear plugs in, trying our best to sleep.
A few years ago I would have never imagined being where I am now.
Living in London, working, drawing. So many things gone through, many people met.
There doesn't seem to be any sense or direction in all that anymore - now that I am here on my own -
away from my family, my friends, and with no more boyfriend.
Accumulating various books, gig and cinema tickets, travel cards, photographs - all to remind that it did actually happen. Sounds pretty sad huh?
Nonetheless there have been plenty of great memorable things in 2011, but every time I'm trying to put these things down in one list I get very confused and mix things up with 2010 too - basically the last over two years have been like a big chunk of time - and what good time it was! Fruitful! Fun! Fab! Fantastic! Fascinating! Almost ran out of F words.

Well, lets hope the next year has lots more great things stored for all of us!

Here's a fragment of the painting I have finished working on today.
The close-up seems rather rough, but that's the nature of wood and I also ran out of sand paper.
Discovered the marvellous effect of tempera paint against acrylics - it also reflects light when
scanned in a rather nice way - in daylight the blue looks much darker and less contrasting.
I like both though!

It's getting cold and foggy outside. I'm sorry, but this english weather can be pretty stupid.

What would I do without books? Probably draw! But at least with books I have a choice.

This weekend was spent wrapped up, continuously drinking tea after tea,

reading lots and drawing not so lots.

Have just received this super activity book for Dublin Contemporary 2011 produced by Anorak magazine. It was illustrated by me and Marcus Walters who also did the cover, and designed by Lewis Smith. Was a great pleasure to work on it, I wish I could see it in action!

Since last winter, when I met James Lucas, one of the creators of Boneshaker magazine, we have been wanting to write and illustrate an article about the first experiences of learning to ride, and now, finally the article is out and is illustrated by me. It was a great pleasure working on these, and I am really happy with the outcome! As usual the magazine is full of beautiful images and skilfully designed by John Coe.

Theres also a lovely set of illustrated cards coming with the issue (illustrators - Adams Carvalho, Imogen Shaw, Robert Hunter, Blanca Gomez, Joe Waldron and me)

I am in desperate need of better materials and more research. The first lino with the kiss went better because it was bigger, this one is 18x11 and has much more detail. I am looking at the works of Eric Ravilious who somehow managed to produce 7x8 cm (tiny!) wood engravings with a great amount of detail in them. There must have been a certain way of doing it which i really need to find out.

Feels like I am back at foundation course (which i never really took). Very exciting!

I have just finished working on a couple of card designs on the theme of Serendipity.

The project was set by Olesya Shchukina and Olya Marchenko to make a set of postcards

created by 9 Russian girls-illustrators.

The postcards will hopefully be printed by the end of summer and I am really looking forward

to what the other participants will come up with.

In my picture an artist finds a new way of working by accident.

I thought the brief was quite tricky but I really enjoyed coming up with the idea for such a complicated word serendipity.

Here is a new matryoshka design I have recently been working on. I like how it came out and look forward to doing more of that sort of idea. Wasn't sure wether to put any smaller matryoshkas inside its brain, but in the end decided to leave it empty, so that one could put anything they wanted inside it. Like a peanut, or a picture of somebody they love.. awww

This morning I have finished varnishing my first ever vessel, that I made myself from start to finish with the help of the Sculpey clay + oven provided by Pro and Marley (ITDREWITSELF.COM). To be honest Sculpey might not be the best medium to make pots, its quite difficult to deal with but it still worked nonetheless, although it is slightly wonky but i still love it!
The decoration was inspired by reds,blacks and golds of Khokhloma. I really like how the varnish made everything look very bright and ripe, almost like the inside of some tropical fruit.

Went to see the lovely people at Oh Comely magazine today to pick up my copy because I did a drawing for the latest issue and here it is:

I really love the look of the magazine and look forward to reading more of it. So far I'm very pleased by the content, it seems to have a unique view on various subjects and is not limited by any specific popular topics. I also discovered two of my fellow creatives were involved in the issue too - there is a very interesting interview with my colleague illustrator Lizzy Stewart and a photograph by my wonderful friend from St.Petersburg, Russia - photographer and illustrator Egor Rogalev.

Oh Comely is available throughout various UK books stores and through online subscribtion.

Working on the image was lots of fun and I was documenting my every step of the drawing, starting from the initial sketch:

In A Forest Dark And Deep

In A Forest Dark and Deep, a play by Neil Labute was a very exciting and fascinating experience. I went to see it last week and decided to make a picture and a little clip dedicated to it.
The play is still being performed in Vaudeville in London, but its only on till the 4th of July, so hurry up if you want to see it!

For the last couple of weeks I have been working on illustrating one of my favourite books of all times - Promise at Dawn by Romain Gary. Its a charming autobiographical story about the relationship of mother and son with all its dramas and highlights. I am surprised Gary's work hasn't been published much in the UK, but hopefully one day I would get a chance to illustrate and do cover art for his books.

Above is a little mock-up cover I put onto the 1963 edition of the book. I will reveal the interior illustrations a bit later!

Have finally made friends with a lovely Moo service. Moo print business cards, post cards, stickers and what not, for rather cheap and the quality is really good! Also, a great thing is that it doesn't have to be minimum 100 of one design, all the designs can be different!
Now I have 60 different cards that I am going to send out after the holidays.

I am currently doing a placement at YCN as an in-house illustrator.

For three days a week I am producing 7 illustrations, one for each day of the week.

Last week my theme was colours of the day and this week I am doing the nursery rhyme "Monday's child". Its a great practice because I get to make lots of work in a short period of time,

very motivating and I am happy with the outcomes.

YCN are lovely guys, doing lots of exciting projects!

Вот уже две недели как я прохожу стажировку в YCN (young creative network - молодая креативная сеть). В течении трех дней в неделю я рисую семь иллюстраций, по одну на каждый день недели. На прошлой неделе я взяла за основу цвета дней, в соответствии с Тайским календарем, на этой неделе я работаю над иллюстрированием английского стихотворения Monday's child, которое рассказывает о характерах детей, родившихся в определенные дни недели.
Работы много, но опыт очень положительный!

I have recently been working towards using less digital stuff in my illustration and

acrylics + watercolours are the mediums of my choice so far.

Although I still use photoshop for the final touches,

Im hoping this might slowly but surely be solved as well.

I have also decided to duplicate my entries in russian, because my Mum pointed out today that my I am definitely loosing my language skills again and sound appalling.

Hope this will be cured too!

Пока что акрил и акварель - мои излюбленные материалы, и не смотря на то, что я все равно использую Фотошоп для доработки изображения, я надеюсь что в скором времени получится обходиться и без этого.

Как видите, я решила вести запись на двух языках, так как сегодня мама, глубоко вздохнув, заметила что я снова теряю навыки речи и звучу отвратительно.

Надеюсь это тоже излечится!

Finally got round to painting Matryoshkas! It was a great pleasure to work on them and I have two more blank ones that I am planning to decorate them soon. The biggest one was the last one I worked on and I will probably do more of layered stuff. Maybe do some more animals hiding in trees or grass.

A small project set by Eastwing agency to improve my portfolio,

but turned out to be a major struggle for me.

I started doing them in december I think, but I am still in the process of figuring out what to do and how. Rethinking the images again now, trying to use pencil drawing more.

The use of women seemed rather dodgy at first and I tried to make the images more abstract, but finding it hard not to use human figures in some cases. But then when all of them are lined up together the ones without people in them stand out the most and kind of dont seem to work with the rest.

Hoping to finish with this one soon!

spent a few days working on this image, inspired by iranian art of paining. im not yet brave enough to move this to the paining level but planning to do a set of images on this theme. I like the amount of small intricate details along with large bold patches of colour. I should think of a story really, but as usual nothing seems good enough so the images are going to be purely decorative for now.

Happy New Year everyone and its extremely snowy back in Moscow. There was an ice rain over here the other day and all the trees are bent down under the weight of the ice, they snap and fall down, breaking the telephone cables and blocking the roads. I have seen stuff like that in a documentary about Montreal, Canada and its rather fascinating to see it in real life. Rather scary too! Cars are like 'snowy hills on wheels' (my mums metaphor).

Anyway, thanks to Christmas traditions of giving presents I now own a wonderful lightbox invention!

And I am hoping it will make me draw more by hand and put the computer aside.

Wish everyone a good year, lots of inspiration and physical abilities to resist sleep and other tempting activities and do more work!

And dont forget about the ones you love, they are the most important people (or creatures) in the world!

Yesterday we went for a few cups of tea and mince pies to the two lovely people behind ITDREWITSELF.
Marley and Pro met us in their welcoming studio full of lots of interesting pictures, prints and objects and other exciting stuff! They are always welcome to meet new talents and like to document the working process so If you want to be documented and have something interesting to show, be sure to come over to see them! They are super friendly and inspiring!

Have also got round to doing some bunting for Concrete Hermit shop on Carnaby street, which was a pleasure to deal with and thank you Jennie (who also does really nice work!) for giving us that opportunity!

Have received a new winter issue of Anorak magazine.

I ve illustrated a short story for it and it was lovely to see my work printed!

Some really nice stuff in this issue!

With my work for this issue I think I tried to hard to make the image child-friendly, although I am pretty pleased with the whole outcome of it and how it looks like a book with pictures rather than a magazine.

A couple of months before Anorak have also published their first activity book where I took part too.

Hello everyone, i would like to announce that internet providers are always a massive disappointment!
But anyway, yeah lots of things have happened since I have moved to london a month ago.
First of all I have received a lovely parcel from Germany with two editions (russian and german) of my friends collaborative magazine/paper Ohrannik Spravok ne Daet , which is hard to read I know. I did an illustration for it and a map element.

Yeah working on that map has been lots of fun and the outcome is pretty good! i wish there was some colour directions for everyone so it could be more readable and clear.

And heres a little halloween feature!

I am working on a self-promotional book at the moment and here is another little practice thing inspired by the Moscow State Circus that was here in Clapham Common last week:

Have been over to Manchester yesterday to paint my contribution to the Toy Shop exhibition in the Art Corner. Must say it was a truly amazing experience and I even managed to meet a few supermen and one superwoman: the extremely welcoming and friendly Laura Gee and Jamie + the wonderful Daniel Frost+his amazing red horses + Stuart Kolakovic whose work is absolutely superb (and slightly russian)!

I will be taking part in a group exhibition called Toy Shop that will take part in Manchester (where I have never been before, oh the wonderful Morrissey city!) and will open on the 1st of October. The exhibition is curated by lovely Laura Gee and will involve a lot of wonderful artists and illustrators. Really look forward to doing my piece, will go to Manchester next week on the 28th of september for a day to set up my contribution. Unfortunately wont be able to stay there till the opening as oh my, im moving to heavenly and hell-like London. a little preview of the uni final project im doing at the moment. its a gypsy caravan exhibition on wheels that tells a gypsy folk tale 'the maiden and the dog' with paintings and drawings. the thing on wheels is causing me a lot of trouble at the moment but i hope its going to be pretty good when its all done.

have been doing some painting experiments for the final project. must say im not in a very good relationship with paints and brushes but i guess we are getting somewhere.

its amazing how easy it is to get used to the possibility to apple+z everything, move things around easily, cut and paste and as soon as im in front of a canvas im scared to death to start because i can not undo and have to plan for ages in advance. its a great experience though and very satisfying too when something does work out.

Yeah last three projects of uni, after that - no uni anymore! Lots of work to do and as i see it in my head its going to be lots of fun too and will work out great i hope. Buying four pram wheels for it tomorrow!!! and a wardrobe maybe too haha will be nice to carry it all the way back to hatfield, interesting..hm..

still no internet at home which makes us all seem clever and go to the library frequently.

Lots of things have been happening here. Its snowing and its cold which was not expected for sure. At least now im ready to go back to cold snowy home. Have done a couple of versions of cards (above). Wanted to screen print them, but the screen did not develop properly, so just printed them out in two layers, which still looks very nice.

Below is another unsuccessful experience of making ginger bread house. It did start well and the actual cookies (not the burnt ones) did taste nice, but could not glue the house together and yeah, some did burn. Had lots of fun doing that though, which is much more important.

Will have some days off everything before leaving back home, planning to do things i have been postponing to do because of the uni work. Hope everyone is fine, merry christmas and take care. x

going a bit mad with the essay writing, giving up on everything else. took a little break to do some sketching+experimenting for the future little book/zine i want to make. + i keep thinking about screenprinting so im trying to somehow develop what i would normally be drawing into limited palette+bolder shapes+the use of empty space etc. dont know yet where its going but i will keep trying.

oh yeah, had a little private mwine+cheese+crackers party today. which was seriously scrumptious! i produced a little invitation leaflet for it but never really used it in the end.

also, i really want a lightbox, but they are flipping expensive, the nice big ones. i wonder if i could make one using £1 christmas lights and some sort of plastic. why not?!

have been working on one big project lately and so far this is my favourite piece out of it (not finished yet though but i like the idea) and i might even turn it into a painting. already doing it actually. with different words though, cause crocodile tears sounds poo. should think of something else. might be a nice design for a t-shirt maybe? so many ideas lately! they just wont stop appearing and it feels so good. ah, too little time though, but theres no rush right, have got all the time in the world really!

now, the little break is over, going back to painting!

Dont know any better way of showing the woods and the fire. Those are stills from Tarkovski's Mirror. One of the most influential film ive seen.

The woods are strange, give a strange feeling, especially here. Somewhere i dont know and dont recognise, but native, close and warm at the same time.

Woods is somewhere you want things to happen but they never do. Woods is a perfect surrounding but nature+human mind dont work together.

Was doodling pictures to my short story i wrote the other day and came up with a little illustrated book.

Called it The Mighty Henry. The format went a bit wrong. It was supposed to be a proper

2-up saddle stitch, but with this new printer the indesign wouldnt print booklet into pdf,

and i couldnt be bothered to re-layout the pages so i just printed out the spreads. so lazy!

Sorry for crappy pictures, i will try to upload proper ones on flickr soon.

Should get a normal digital camera really, but cant afford spending so much money on it.

Baked my first quiche pie today and it was pretty successful! Will get the professional opinion from my friends tomorrow. Ah, really worried, hope they will like it! Not worried, really.

I eat half of it in one go and really enjoyed it.

honey, dentist, bubble, pin

was given the four words: honey, dentist, bubble and pin to make up a short story out of those. was trying hard to make something out of these words but in the end came up with a simple pointless story. dont know if it makes any sense from the literature point of view but i kind of like it:

Henry enjoyed his every visit to the dentist, he didnt know what it was about. His parents teeth were pretty bad and so were his, so even though it caused him a lot of pain he wouldnt miss a chance.

The preparation for the visit was like a ritual for him: he would examine his teeth in the mirror for ages, brush them carefully for 2 minutes exactly, follow it with a chewing gum, blow a big bubble so that it would explode. All these in front of the mirror - the visual aspect of caring about his teeth was an extremely important thing.

Every time the dentist walked into the room Henry would fire out his usual question: "when is a door not a door?" The dentist would never remember the right answer, although he has been dealing with Henry for the last few years.

Henry also knew that his dentist was allergic to honey, so he gave him candies containing honey, the dentist would never refuse. So during the procedure Henry would watch his dentist turned all red and funny. Every time it happened, the dentist would excuse himself and leave the room. Henry pinned his ears back carefully and listened to the dentist protesting about his own job. What an enjoyable experience it was for Henry, and every time he left with an overwhelming feeling of self-satisfaction.

Here it is, i dont know if its good or bad or anything, i might think of something else tomorrow, but here it is so far, the first random things that came to my mind. I found it quite visual and personal, i dont know.

its a very nervous period now, because of the visa waiting and all the traveling preparations. . was ill for a week, couldnt get out of the bed at all, did lots of sleeping though.+ lots of unwanted emotions that dont really make sense. must be the lack of activity while being ill.

almost back to normal now starting to do stuff.

That is very true when they say improvement only comes when one works all the time. its the same with every skill i guess. difficult to do so though because there are so many other things happening all the time, and The Mood is bloody annoying, keeps changing all the time. but im learning to direct it, no matter if its good or bad.

have just finished watching a documentary about robert crumb. this clip is just a small piece of it so i recommend

to find a full one, its truly amazing. The context of his becoming what he is - his family, school years, social environment,

personal likes and hates, and how they all developed into intolerance and complete rejection of the outside world, but never

actually stopped him, only made him wish to revenge.

the song kept randomly being chosen in my player throughout today. in the park there were these birds i never pay much attention to, but this time they seemed amazing. one of them as you see was climbing up the trees like that, and the couple on the right were quarreling all the time, and one of them was finding food and giving it straight into the beak of the other one, the fluffy one. birds are cool!

the turkey bits had to be cooked as soon as possible anyway. unfortunately it seems to be a problem here to get small portions of any meat, every pack contains around a kilo. so here is the turkey omelette with tomatoes and broccoli ive cooked today. I enjoy cooking omelettes, very easy and super-tasty.
heres my usual meal that is much more simple - raw vegs+ leaves+ cottage cheese + some other cheese+pesto. definitely needs more colours to look pretty, but tastes good enough.

cooked my first meat meal for the last 6 years since im a vegetarian. didnt try it obviously but it was proven to be very good by the main food expert in the house

happy with my cooking skills! dealing with raw meat was pretty much stressfull though, but exciting nonetheless. its turkey bits with potatoes and broccoli and some seeds and curry. smelled good i must confess)

have finished these two posters today finally. the process was too long, not the actual process of making, but its been about one month since i got the brief. and during that month the information for the posters was changing , logos sent etc (i cut off the logos here because they are super ugly, not that they spoil the artwork, but they are still ugly). Im sure a few changes will be still made, but these are pretty much finished anyway. Im not quite happy with the first one, it seems a bit empty now that i look on the second one. And for the second one i finally had a chance to use my painting that didnt quite work as it is, but it was nice to experiment with it being a background. Im also pleased because i was thinking recently about developing my work by adding background items + more colour. Anyway, whats done is done, need to move on.

i also bought this special bath stuff that i never tried before and it made the water turn mad green colour. interesting.

finished a book the system of one the other day. have been working on the drawings for it for the last few weeks. not that im very happy with my work but i do enjoy the feeling the book gives. i guess i rushed as wanted to make one quickly for the pipeandhorse website.

have seen the works of graduation students from royal college of art today, a lot of stuff there! and most stuff is really very impressive. this might be a good push to work more, cause this summer and next school year expectations are depressing and im often catching myself lazying around.

need to find something else for inspiration rather than finished works of art. the countryside doesnt help these days.

thats just how my room looked for the last few days before out school final year exhibition. was a nightmare to walk through it but a heaven for my kolka cat.

these days are half lazy half super busy. im trying to fight with myself and make myself work while my body is definitely longing for some rest. the absence of school deadlines makes it more difficult.

i also got all my year grades today and was pretty much pleased about them. now the paperwork starts, which i hate even to think about.

honestly, just want these summer months to pass by as quickly as possible so i could start studying again.
